New York’s highest court on Thursday overturned the felony sex crimes conviction of the notorious Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, a staggering reversal of a bedrock case in the #MeToo era that prompted countless victims of sexual harassment and assault to come forward as accusers. In a bitterly contested 4-to-3 decision, the New York Court of Appeals found that the judge who had presided over Mr. Weinstein’s case deprived him of a fair trial in 2020 by allowing prosecutors to call witnesses who said Mr. Weinstein had assaulted them — but whose accusations were not the basis for any of the charges against him. Responding on Thursday, the Manhattan district attorney, Alvin L. Bragg, announced that he would seek to prosecute Mr. Weinstein again. “We will do everything in our power to retry this case, and remain steadfast in our commitment to survivors of sexual assault,” a spokeswoman for Mr. Bragg’s office said. The case was originally prosecuted by his predecessor, Cyrus R. Vance Jr.

The journey that ended with a man setting himself on fire on Friday outside the Manhattan courthouse where Donald J. Trump was being tried seemed to have begun in Florida, with a series of increasingly bizarre outbursts. Standing in the afternoon chill, the man, Max Azzarello, 37, of St. Augustine, Fla., threw pamphlets into the air before dousing himself with an accelerant and setting his body ablaze. The police hurried to extinguish the flames, but officials said his injuries were grave, and he was being treated at a hospital burn unit. The fire just a block or two from the courthouse appeared calculated to draw widespread attention, horrifying bystanders and temporarily overshadowing the momentous trial of a former president. His social media postings and arrest records suggest the immolation stemmed instead from a place of conspiracy theories and paranoia.

The deadliest day in Syracuse police history in over 30 years began when two officers attempted to pull over a gray Honda Civic on a quiet corner outside a church. The car peeled away, out of sight — but not before the police officers clocked its license plate. The officers soon tracked the Civic to Darien Drive in the town of Salina, a suburb about 15 minutes away. Another neighbor, Mousa Alzokari, 47, who works at a Syracuse newsstand, was home with his five children in their living room. And across the street, Daniel Kay, 73, was reading his Sunday newspaper at his front window.

Morgan Stanley thinks stocks are positioning for economic growth to stay robust. A no landing scenario means the economy will continue chugging along despite higher Federal Reserve rates. Energy is the second best-performing S & P 500 sector during that time, up 16%. He also highlighted the outperformance in broader cyclical stocks, which are closely tied to the economy. To be sure, Wilson still has a 4,500 S & P 500 target for 2024 , the second lowest on CNBC Pro's Market Strategist Survey .

The music teacher’s classes at the strict, no-nonsense reform school in the woods of upstate New York would seem to be a teenager’s respite amid all the rules, a place for expression and discovery. But a criminal indictment unsealed Thursday portrayed that teacher as a domineering and abusive tyrant who, during one-on-one trips away from school and outside the state, raped his teenage students or forced them into sexual activity. The indictment follows years of lawsuits that have portrayed the Family Foundation School, a small boarding academy in rural Delaware County, as something closer to an unsupervised, violent prison. The teacher, Paul Geer, 56, was arrested Wednesday evening in Hancock, N.Y., where he lives a short distance from the site of the school, which closed in 2014. He was charged with six counts related to bringing three different children across state lines to engage in unlawful sexual activity.

The energy sector is demonstrating strength with a "compelling valuation" that could set stocks up for a comeback after underperforming the broader market since September, according to Morgan Stanley. Morgan Stanley recommends ConocoPhillips , Devon Energy , Occidental Petroleum and Diamondback Energy as ways to play the potential comeback. The energy sector has been the best performer over the past month, but is still lagging the rally that began in October. The S & P 500 energy sector is up more than 11% in 2024, while West Texas Intermediate futures have gained 14%. Earnings revision breadth for energy stocks also appears to have bottomed and is moving in a positive direction, according to Morgan Stanley.

“Fairytale of New York” also immortalizes a specific group of people doing a specific thing:“The boys of the N.Y.P.D. Choir,” Mr. MacGowan belted, “were singing ‘Galway Bay.’”Years later, the truth can be told: The boys of the N.Y.P.D. Choir did not know the words to “Galway Bay.”Also, there was no N.Y.P.D. He spun a tale that felt grounded in a real place and conjured from iconic streetscapes, where the wind goes right through you and it’s no place for the old. People who have never set foot in the city can imagine the drunk tank, and the man and woman kissing on the corner and dancing through the night.

Not surprisingly, Wall Street tends to be a bullish group. Wall Street has a terrible track record All of this gets investor juices flowing. Wall Street strategists collectively have a terrible track record. As a result, you might be tempted to think you should pay no attention to Wall Street, or anybody else. If nothing else, the predictions of Wall Street strategists are a good starting point for all of us to think about the near future.

Morgan Stanley chief investment officer Michael Wilson is all too aware of these many problems the market is facing. But broadly, Wilson and his peers are hopeful that the economy will continue to grow next year, spurring earnings growth along with it, pushing stocks higher. Wilson believes that margin expansion will underpin earnings growth next year. "Once that happens, however, and demand begins to recover, positive operating leverage resumes and drives margin expansion and earnings growth." He narrowed his search to stocks in the top 20% of earnings stability, stocks in the top 20% of earnings quality, and stocks that were rated overweight by Morgan Stanley analysts.

Here's how Morgan Stanley thinks the stock market will move in 2024, the economic warning signs investors should watch for, and which stocks are best positioned to outperform next year. A stronger stock market in 2024You'd think with the myriad problems stocks are facing right now that the market is in for a difficult year ahead. Wilson believes that earnings growth will accelerate as the year progresses. Morgan StanleyBeyond strong earnings growth for individual companies, Wilson expects that increased spending in a variety of industries will provide fiscal support across the market. Guided by the themes above, Wilson polled Morgan Stanley analysts for their top stock picks heading into 2024.

But Morgan Stanley chief investment officer Michael Wilson says the real opportunity lies in how AI will be used by companies, not by individuals. "Further our analysis suggests Generative AI technologies can impact the $2.1 trillion of labor costs attached to those jobs today, expanding to $4.1 trillion in three years in the US alone." REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 13 (Reuters) - Morgan Stanley said on Monday it expects the S&P 500 (.SPX) to end 2024 at 4,500, and predicted earnings recovery through the year. However, near-term earnings headwinds will persist into early next year before a "durable" recovery takes hold, Wilson said. Wilson sees strong earnings environment in 2025 with a 16% jump in profit driven by artificial intelligence-led improvement in productivity and margin expansion. Morgan Stanley highlighted several companies that are prepared to withstand — and even benefit from —consumers' shifting preferences this holiday season, as inflationary pressures dampen shoppers' budgets this quarter. According to Morgan Stanley's proprietary monthly survey, most holiday shoppers are looking to see 30% discounts, on average, before they begin spending this holiday season. A strong holiday season should benefit the entire airline industry given the ongoing demand for air travel among consumers across income brackets, according to Morgan Stanley. "Durable goods spending has slowed and that is expected to continue into the holiday season," Wilson said in the note. Toys could emerge as "relative winner" this season as they become a more top-of-mind purchase for parents during the holiday season, analyst Megan Alexander wrote.

The short, slender woman clutches two leashes in her right hand. At their ends are two goats, Marshmallow and Brownie. The three of them stand in the human jet stream of Rockefeller Center, and people stop to take pictures or pet the animals. Only in New York, they say. A young man in a tuxedo, part of a raucous wedding party, stops, grins, and asks what brought her here.

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 16 (Reuters) - A rally in the S&P 500 in the fourth quarter of 2023 "is more likely than not", Morgan Stanley's Michael Wilson said in a note. Morgan Stanley maintains its 3,900 year-end price target for the S&P 500 and believes the best way to position is a barbell of defensive growth stocks that have stable earnings, and late-cycle cyclical stocks such as energy. Stocks came under selling pressure last week as investors rushed to Treasuries after a surprise attack by militant group Hamas against Israel, but S&P 500 still managed to eke out some gains. "The fact that stocks rallied early in the week emboldened the view that equity markets could withstand another exogenous shock," Wilson said.

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsAug 21 (Reuters) - The S&P 500 will likely struggle to make more headway after rallying almost 14% so far this year as investors start to question the sustainability of the U.S. economy's resilience, Morgan Stanley equity strategists said. One reason is that a "sell-the news" mentality has taken hold following second-quarter earnings, potentially slowing price momentum, said Morgan Stanley strategists, led by Michael Wilson. "While limited in downside magnitude, this recent price action is a change and suggests stocks may be starting to question the sustainability of the economic resiliency we experienced in the first half of the year," said Wilson. Wilson also sees fading tailwinds from excess savings among consumers, which leaves consumer discretionary stocks vulnerable.

Right behind them are workers in a little-known industry who offer traumatized homeowners what is known as emergency mitigation services. He dove into this hyper-intense new job, he said, chasing fires and the promise of a straight paycheck. His boss had taught him how to immediately find the homeowner in a crowd of people outside a burning home: Look at everyone’s feet. “Everyone got out?” His boss taught him that, too: Act concerned. Never ask how they’re doing.

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo License this content on Reuters ConnectNEW YORK, Aug 1 (Reuters) - Oppenheimer Asset Management on Tuesday projected the S&P 500 would rise above its record high by year end, the latest Wall Street firm to grow more bullish on the outlook for stocks following the market's rally this year. Oppenheimer lifted its year-end price target for the S&P 500 to 4,900 from the 4,400 projection it set in December, Chief Investment Strategist John Stoltzfus said in a note. The S&P 500 record closing high is 4,796.56, reached on Jan. 3, 2022, while the index's intraday record is 4,818.62, which it hit on Jan. 4, 2022. Oppenheimer's more bullish view comes after Citigroup (C.N) recently boosted its S&P 500 price target by 15%, saying the more upbeat view reflected increased probability of an economic soft landing.
